冷酷粗暴的流浪漢約翰尼（大衛·休里斯 David Thewlis飾）來到倫敦尋找自己的前任女友路易絲·克蘭西（萊絲莉·夏普 Lesley Sharp飾），從一座失業問題嚴重的工業城市曼徹斯特來到交織在光鮮與黑暗中的大都市倫敦。約翰尼結識了路易絲的室友索菲（凱特琳·卡特利吉 Katrin Cartlidge飾），兩人當天就在公寓做了愛。一覺醒來，已經愛上約翰尼的索菲得到的卻是約翰尼一副玩世不恭的冷面拒絕。憤世嫉俗的約翰尼不僅仇視女性，也痛恨著自己與他身處的一切。他冷漠地與陌生女人做愛，絕望地與這個世界暴力相向。 本片榮獲1993年第46屆戛納電影節主競賽單元-最佳導演大獎，男主角大衛·休里斯憑借此片榮獲最佳男演員獎，本片也同時入圍第46屆戛納電影節主競賽單元-金棕櫚獎。
