 克萊默夫婦像普通的美國夫婦一樣，克萊默先生（達斯汀?霍夫曼 Dustin Hoffman 飾）在外工作掙錢，克萊默夫人（梅麗爾?斯特里普 Meryl Streep 飾）則在家照料照料6歲的兒子比利（賈斯汀?亨利 Justin Henry 飾）。由于克萊默先生忙于工作忽略了家庭，克萊默夫人某天憤然出走，留下了父子兩。克萊默先生現在一方面要忙于工作，一方面又要照顧比利，生活一時陷入麻煩中。克萊默先生不善家務，在照料比利時洋相百出：第一次為比利煎西多士、過程十分恐怖；比利不吃飯要吃雪糕，克萊默先生想阻止卻不懂溝通……幸好在女鄰居的幫助下，克萊默先生逐漸適應了單身父親的生活。父子兩越來越親密，互相依賴。這時，克萊默夫人回來了，她已經是紐約一名出色的設計師了。她回來要拿回比利的撫養權……
